Darbhanga

Darbhanga district is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar state in eastern India, and Darbhanga city is the administrative headquarters of this district and 5th largest city of Bihar as well. Darbhanga district lies in Historical Mithila region.

 

Darbhanga district is a part of Darbhanga Division. The district is bounded on the north by Madhubani district, on the south by Samastipur district, on the east by Saharsa district and on the west by Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur districts. The district covers an area of 2,279 km2 (880 sq mi). There are several locations related to the epic Ramayana. The Ahalya Sthan, Gautam Ashram and Gautam Kund are major destinations for the Ramayana circuit in the district.

About Benipur Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) Constituency

Located in Darbhanga district of Bihar, Benipur is one the 243 legislative assembly segments of the state. Benipur was re-constituted as an assembly constituency in 2008 after the implementation of the orders of the Delimitation Commission of India. The same commission recommended that the constituency would consist of Biraul, Baheri and Benipur community development blocks.

The Benipur legislative assembly segment has a big electorate of 2,54,675 voters. There are 1,34,583 men and 1,20,092 women in the constituency who have the right to exercise their franchise. The present sitting MLA of the constituency is BJP’s Gopal Jee Thakur. Thakur won the seat having accounted for 43,222 votes in the assembly elections held in November 2010. Hare Krishna Yadav of RJD settled as the runner-up with 29,265 votes. The elections were held in Benipur in 2010 after 38 years. The assembly segment of Benipur is a part of the Darbhanga Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituency of Bihar.

About Alinagar Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) Constituency

Alinagar is a legislative assembly in Darbhanga district of the state of Bihar. It is also a part of the Darbhanga Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituency. Alinagar was formed as a legislative assembly segment after the implementation of the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission of India in 2008. The Delimitation Commission also suggested that the Alinagar constituency would comprise Ghanshyampur, Tardih and Alinagar community development blocks.

Alinagar accommodates a total of 2,39,416 men and women who are qualified to exercise the right to vote in the constituency. Amongst them 1,26,043 are males and 1,13,370 females. Abdul Bari Siddiqui was the first ever MLA of the Alinagar constituency. He won the seat by bagging 37,923 votes in the assembly elections held in 2010. Siddiqui defeated Prabhakar Choudhary of JD (U) by a margin of 4,989 votes.

Darbhanga Rural is a legislative assembly constituency in the district of the same name in Bihar. It is a part of the Darbhanga parliamentary constituency of the state. The assembly constituency of Darbhanga Rural has 2,50,633 eligible voters, amongst whom are 1,34,841 men and 1,15,792 women. According to the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission of India 2008, Darbhanga Rural covers Bhalpatti, Nazra Mohammada, Sonki, Adalpur, Nainaghat, Atihar, Muria, Balha, Loam, Bijuli, Khutwara, Chhotaipatti, Kharua, Dhoi, Ghorghatta and Dularpur gram panchayats of Darbhanga community development block; Manigachhi CD block.

Darbhanga Rural assembly constituency was reserved for the candidates belonging to the Scheduled Casts until 2008. It was thrown open to all as recommended by the Delimitation Commission. RJD’s Lalit Kumar Yadav represents Darbhanga Rural in the state legislative assembly at present. He defeated Ashraf Hussain of JD (U) in the 2010 assembly elections. Yadav got 29,776 votes, while Hussain settled for 26,100 votes.

As per the Delimitation Commission of India 2008, Darbhanga assembly constituency comprises Sahbajpur, Kabir Chak, Basudeopur, Kansi, Shisho West, Shisho East, Ranipur and Sara Mahamad gram panchayat of Darbhanga community development block and the Municipal Corporation of Darbhanga.

A total of 2,57,754 people in Darbhanga assembly segment have the right to vote. Amongst these 1,38,693 are men and 1,19,055 are women.
