West Champaran

West Champaran is an administrative district in the state of Bihar in India, located just 60 km (37 mi) west of Birgunj. It is the largest district in Bihar with an area of 5,228 km2(2,019sq mi). It is a part of Tirhut Division. The district headquarters are located in Bettiah. The district is known for its open border with Nepal. One of the major location in West Champaran is Kumar Bagh for SAIL Special Processing Unit and Bhitiharwa where Mahatma Gandhi started Satyagrah Aandolan.

It has nine constituency namely Valmiki Nagar, Ramnagar, Narkatiaganj, Bagaha, Lauriya, Nautan, Chanpatia, Bettiah and Sikta.

Located in the Paschim Champaran district of Bihar is the Valmiki Nagar Vidhan Sabha Constituency. It came into existence as per the recommendation of the delimitation commission in 2008. The first election was held in the year 2010. Dhiren Pratap Singh is the sitting MLA from this constituency while the Bihar Assembly Election 2020 is expected around October – November 2020.

 

Dhiren Pratap Singh had won with a vote share of 36% in the previous election. INC’s Irshad Hussain was the runner up with half the vote share of the winner, which is an 18% vote share. The constituency has a total of 2,95,342 voters as per the 2015 assembly election. The polling percentage for the previous Bihar Assembly Election was 67 %.

Ramnagar Vidhan Sabha seat is one of the 38 seats of the Bihar Legislative Assembly reserved for Scheduled Castes. It falls under Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha Constituency and is located in the Paschim Champaran district of Bihar. The 2,61,358 eligible voters of this constituency elected BJP’s Bhagirathi Devi as their MLA. The next election will be held during the Bihar Assembly Election 2020 approximately in the month of October or November.

The 2,72,228 eligible voters of Bagaha Vidhan Sabha/ Assembly constituency had elected Bharatiya Janata Party’s Raghav Sharan Pandey as their MLA in the Bihar Election 2015. On the other hand, JDU’s Bhishm Sahani stood second with 4.1% votes less than the winner. Congress had a stronghold on Bagaha seat as it won the elections from 1957 to 1985. Sikta Vidhan Sabha/Assembly constituency is located in the Paschim Champaran district of Bihar. It comes under the Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha constituency. It has a total of 2,43,593 eligible voters. The 2015 Bihar election experienced 66% voter turnout in Sikta constituency.

 

JDU’s Firoj Ahmad was elected in the 2015 Bihar election from the Sikta constituency. BJP’s Dilip Varma lost to him by getting 1.83% fewer votes. Dilip Verma had been winning the Sikta seat from 1991-2005, on the tickets of various political parties. Firoj Ahmad broke his winning streak in Nov 2005 election.
